Learn about the Candidates

Vermont holds elections for state and county-wide candidates every two years in November.

During the General Elections, Vermonters vote on:

  • National offices: U.S. Senate (every six years) and Congress (every two years)
  • Statewide offices: Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Auditor
  • District and regional offices: Representatives to the statehouse in Montpelier, state senators for the 14 VT counties, assistant/probate judges, sheriff.

In August, each political party holds a primary election when more than one person is interested in representing a registered political party on the ballot.  Voters do not need to be registered with any party to vote in the primaries or general election, however a voter may only choose to vote on only one party's primary ballot.

The Vermont Secretary of State's office is a resource for general candidate and election information.
