Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to encourage citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies help improve communication between the citizens of Burlington and City government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Ward 6 meets the first Thursday of the month. Meeting place: Greek Orthodox Church 600 South Willard Street.

The Burlington Planning & Zoning Department  facilitates the community preparation of a master land use and development plan for Burlington’s Downtown and Waterfront area through 'Design Charette's'. This is the closing presentation of a week-long intense and participatory process. The overall objective of this project is to provide a comprehensive guide for Downtown and Waterfront development that will sustain and enhance economic vitality, guide future development, create more housing and jobs, preserve historic character, protect the environment over the next 10-20 years. The success of this process and its future implementation includes community participation, input and engagement. The Chittenden County Reginal Planning Organization (CCRPC) promotes cooperation among the 19 municipalities of the Chittenden County region. 

The Planning & Zoning Department is happy to announce that the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Grant Officer for PlanBTV – Downtown & Waterfront, Dwayne Marsh, was in Burlington Tuesday, December 6. at Fletcher Free Library, 235 College Street in the Community Room downstairs.

•Mr. Marsh talks about the HUD-DOT-EPA Partnership for Sustainable Communities formed back in 2009 to help improve access to affordable housing, more transportation options, and lower transportation costs while protecting the environment in communities nationwide.

Back in February 2011, our department began the preparation of a master land use and development plan for Burlington’s Downtown and Waterfront area. The overall objective of this project is to provide a comprehensive guide for Downtown and Waterfront development that fosters sustainable economic growth over the next 10-20 years. We hope to develop focused, actionable, area-specific strategies to ensure the vitality of the central core of our community and enable us to achieve our community vision. While many other planning efforts involving the downtown or waterfront have taken place over the years, none have been as comprehensive in scope and strategic in design. The planning process will place an emphasis on ways to promote and improve mixed uses and quality urban design, affordable and workforce housing, transportation and parking management, and the quality and capacity of public infrastructure. In order to achieve a future sustainable economic growth, we will all need to make the hard decisions necessary to facilitate the continued evolution of our downtown.
