Burlington Mayor's Press Conference: Conclusion of the City’s 3-year Enhanced Paving Program 11/18/2011
Burlington, VT. Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss joins Department of Public Works (DPW) staff tomorrow, November 18, at 11 am for a press conference to discuss the conclusion of the City’s 3-year enhanced paving program. The press conference is at the walkway on the western side of Battery Street, across from the intersection of Battery and Cherry Streets (near the Little Italy plaque).
The press conference includes information from DPW’s evaluation of the Pavement Condition Indicator (PCI) rating before and after the paving program, which wraps 11/19/11. The 3-year program has been funded by a voter-approved $5.5M bond and increase in the dedicated tax for the street program.
All told, the City has invested $9.M in street-paving over the last 3 years, with numerous City streets – from major thoroughfares to neighborhood streets – seeing improvement.
Burlington Mayor's Press Conference: Stormwater and Wastewater Improvements 10/28/2011
Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss is joined by DPW staff and others to announce details of $1.3M in combined sewer stormwater mitigation projects and wastewater aeration energy efficiency improvements funded through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
While most of the work has been underground and therefore not visible to the public, this project has made a significant improvement on water quality in the Lake Champlain Basin and operational energy consumption within the City’s largest wastewater treatment plant. Initial evaluations of the project impact include a reduction of several hundred thousands of gallons in stormwater runoff previously draining to the combined sewer through both runoff reduction and runoff separation projects, as well as substantial savings through more energy efficient technology at the Main Wastewater Treatment Plant.
More information about the City’s stormwater program can be found here: http://www.dpw.ci.burlington.vt.us/stormwater/. More information about the City’s wastewater treatment program can be found here: www.dpw.ci.burlington.vt.us/water/

Burlington Mayor's Press Conference: Burlington City Hall 'Prevent Lead Poisoning' Poster Contest 10/11/2011
Lead poisoning is one of the most significant environmental health hazards affecting children in the United States. It is especially critical to address lead safety in areas with older housing stock, such as Vermont and Burlington. In an effort to inform and engage community children (ages 7-8) and their families, the Burlington Lead Program (BLP) has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington to educate kids about lead and lead poisoning. Education activities concluded with the children participating in an art contest that coincides with National Lead Poisoning Prevention month. About the Burlington Lead Program: The Community and Economic Development Office’s (CEDO) Burlington Lead Program is “dedicated to the prevention of childhood lead poisoning by reducing lead paint hazards and increasing awareness about the dangers posed by lead.” Find out more at: www.cedoburlington.org/housing/programs_and_services/lead_paint/lead_program_main.htm.
