Artful Word: First Night Burlington - Laughing Couple 12/31/2011

A video by James Gero.

The name of Laughing Couple was given to Rick and Carolyn by an Incan boy, named Joey, whom they befriended while attending a Powwow. The name stuck and became their "identity". This name naturally carried forward when Rick and Carolyn began their storytelling venture in earnest.

When asked how they came about doing Native American storytelling together, the reply is always "This is the path the Creator has set us upon". Both Rick and Carolyn feel that the stories and artwork they create goes far beyond simple entertainment. "This is a way for us to reach people who would not otherwise be exposed to our culture. We feel that we are not only representing and honoring our ancestors, but that we are also respecting and honoring our people as a "modern" entity". The storytelling and artwork provide a friendly avenue for us to introduce the dominant culture to who we are and what we are." The response to what they offer has been consistently positive from all audiences. The Laughing Couple programs are geared for Family Fun and entertain audiences of All ages.

Artful Word: Adam Putnam: Magic Lanterns Opening at Burlington City Arts 12/09/2011

Community producer James Gero's video the Burligton City Arts 'Magic Lanterns' opening.  In this exhibition, New York-based artist Adam Putnam offers three surprising and evocative explorations into the experience of physical space. His Magic Lantern installations use a 19th-century theatrical technique of projecting light through painted slides. By using bulbs suspended in translucent boxes Putnam projects ethereal architectural interiors on empty gallery walls; complete with doors and endless corridors. Putnam’s meticulous graphite on paper drawings of abstracted cathedral-like sculptures feature erotized cavities and protrusions, including arches, buttresses and crenulations. In photos of his startling contortionist performances, Putnam implausibly folds his six-foot-eight-inch frame into tiny spaces, including cabinets and bookcases. As the everyday experience of space is challenged by the synthetic environments of the online world, the cumulative effect of Putnam’s work is to capture and question our disorienting and mutating sense of physical space. Putnam’s work was included in the 2008 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum, NY. This program also includes BCA's Barbara Smail Award ceremony.

Artful Word: Diwali Night 2011 at UVM Davis Center 11/05/2011

A video by community producer James Gero. Diwali, or Deepavali, or "Festival of Lights", is the biggest Indian Hindu festival that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. In north India, according to the legend, Lord Rama slew his wife Sita's kidnapper, the demon King Ravana, during his exile. The festival is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom of Ayodhya. The streets through which he returned to his palace were lit with 'diyas' or small earthen lamps. In south India, according to the legend, it was the day Lord Sri Krishna defeated the demon king Narakasura. Even to this day, every home in India is illuminated with diyas during Diwali. Lakhsmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, is also worshipped during Diwali. To welcome Lakshmi, people decorate their home entrances with 'rangolis', which are exquisite designs made with colors and flowers. A dazzling display of fireworks decorate the night skies, signifying the eventual victory of light over darkness. This festival is celebrated by one and all and is the true portrayal of the richness and vibrancy of Indian Hindu culture.

From a hulking sculptural giant dominating the east gallery to delicate hand-carved bird-like creatures in the west gallery, Lenhardt’s work is simultaneously idyllic and unnerving. Rich with fantastical flora and fauna, Lenhardt presents his enigmatic scenes in a diverse range of mediums including drawings, paintings and illuminated multi-layered paint-on-glass light boxes. A highly successful commercial artist, Lenhardt has the distinction of having created over 45 snowboard designs for Burton Snowboards—more than any other artist.

Artful Word: BCA - Jessica Nissen’s Rorschach Drawings 03/05/2011

A video by community producer James Gero.

Jessica Nissen’s Rorschach Drawings explore perception, the subconscious and extremes of spontaneous creativity. Based upon the controversial psychological test of the same name, it features over 30 drawings from her All in Our Head series. Originally designed to evaluate personality traits and underlying mental disorders, Nissen uses the psychological test as a point of departure, drawing and painting directly on top of her own Rorschach inspired inkblots. Her inspired, free-associated responses range from hybrid creatures to suburban architecture. These intriguing and exquisitely rendered illustrations are both playful and hallucinogenic. For more information, please click here.

Jessica Nissen splits her time between NYC, where she works as a scenic artist for the entertainment industry and Vermont, teaching drawing at Middlebury College.

Artful Word: Drawing Strength - Alisa Dworsky 01/17/2011

A video by community producer James Gero.

With ropes and bamboo, artist and architectural designer Alisa Dworsky transforms the east and west galleries into complex physical environments. In the installation Surface Tension, black hand-crocheted rope is used to build a landscape suggestive of topographical maps and computer-generated virtual worlds. Dramatic peaks, formed by an upward pull in the rope, are balanced by a series of suspended counterweights. Points of View, a complex network of bamboo tetrahedrons, fills the west gallery. Blue reflective tape on the structure suggests a waterline horizon, which creates a shimmering, level plane when illuminated with provided headlamps. With the play of rigid and organic lines, as well as the projection of shadows on the gallery walls, Dworsky reinterprets two-dimensional drawing into three-dimensional form. For more info, please click here.

Artful Word: Homunculus - Steven Budington 10/29/2010

In Steve Budington’s Homunculus, human bodies unravel, fly apart, and merge with prosthetic technology. Budington’s new body of work takes as its point of departure the neuroscientific concept of the “cortical homunculus”: a remapped image of the human form that scales body parts in relation to the degree of sensory input present in each area. In a radical redefinition of figurative painting, Budington’s imagery emphasizes embodied experience: the proliferation, or complete absence, of sensory organs; Gore-Tex in exchange for skin; and male and female genitals spliced onto the same body. From iPods to cosmetic surgery, artificial hearts and neuroplastic implants, our culture increasingly extends and enhances the physical body. Budington explores and questions how this next step in our physical evolution will transform our sense of self and our perception of the environment we inhabit.

Steve Budington lives in Burlington and is a professor of painting at the University of Vermont.

Artful Word: Buffalo Soldiers 100 Years in Vermont 08/01/2009

In July of 1909, seven hundred and fifty 10th cavalry “Buffalo Soldiers” marched into Vermont for their assignment at Fort Ethan Allen, Colchester, Vermont. Prior to their arrival, they had been stationed in various other locations such as Cuba, Kansas, and the Philippines, all warmer climates. Their first fall and winter in Vermont found them ill equipped for the weather as they were still wearing summer issue clothing. Sgt. George Osborne said he “like to froze to death.” Capt. Edward Glass, the regiment's historian, reported “The first winter in Ethan Allen was a long, hard grind, with guard tours walked in blizzards, full pack inspection in weather that caused much comment from our men, who had just come from the neighborhood of the Equator.”
