Description

Among the top awards will be the Chief’s Award, this year going to Officer Krystal Wrinn for her comprehensive efforts, including special emphasis on domestic violence. Also receiving top honors will be United States Attorney Tristram “Tris” Coffin, Henry “Skip” Gates, and Aimee Stearns for their opiate addiction prevention efforts via the film “The Opiate Effect.” Details of that award follow:

As Vermont continues its’ efforts to respond to the emerging issues of addiction and drug related crime there is exceptional work being done in a variety of areas by a host of people. There are a few efforts that rise directly to the surface as examples of truly exceptional work. In 2009 Skip Gates lost his son to a heroin overdose. What followed was a partnership to produce an educational effort to help Vermont's young people stay clear of opiate addiction. In the years that followed, Skip and our United State’s Attorney – Tris Coffin and his staff, with the help Derek Hallquist, Green River Pictures LLC, created a short movie entitled “The Opiate Effect.” Skip and Tris have traveled Vermont showing the movie and talking to young people about addiction and the challenges of drug abuse. Simultaneously, Tris and his staff at the U.S. Attorney’s Office have been on the forefront of holding drug dealers – who prey on our communities by bringing the most destructive substances imaginable to our streets – accountable.

Their combined efforts are remarkable and are emblematic of the best Vermont and New England have to offer. For those efforts they will be awarded the 2014 Queen City Police Foundation Antonio B. Pomerleau Medal of Honor.

No outreach effort can occur with key people who are the “glue” that makes things work. As Tris and Skip have been in the forefront of the efforts to get “The Opiate Effect” widely viewed and fully incorporated as a centerpiece of Vermont’s prevention message, Victim Advocate Aimee Stearns provided and still provides the “glue” that helped to form the concept for the film and to ensure that it is widely seen. Her efforts have been exceptional and have earned her the 2014 Queen City Police Foundation Community Hero Award.

For over thirteen years, the Queen City Police Foundation has worked closely with the Burlington Police Department to provide funding for projects to better serve the community. The Foundation is continually looking for innovative ways to provide the tools needed for the Burlington Police Department to work more efficiently, with enhanced safety, and with greater impact on community health and well being. Simultaneously, the Burlington Rotary has consistently sponsored an annual awards ceremony honoring police employees and community members who make a real difference in public health and safety. This year, for the first time, the two organizations are combining events into one comprehensive ceremony.
