Artful Word: Diwali Night 2011 at UVM Davis Center 11/05/2011

A video by community producer James Gero. Diwali, or Deepavali, or "Festival of Lights", is the biggest Indian Hindu festival that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. In north India, according to the legend, Lord Rama slew his wife Sita's kidnapper, the demon King Ravana, during his exile. The festival is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom of Ayodhya. The streets through which he returned to his palace were lit with 'diyas' or small earthen lamps.In south India, according to the legend, it was the day Lord Sri Krishna defeated the demon king Narakasura. Even to this day, every home in India is illuminated with diyas during Diwali. Lakhsmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, is also worshipped during Diwali. To welcome Lakshmi, people decorate their home entrances with 'rangolis', which are exquisite designs made with colors and flowers. A dazzling display of fireworks decorate the night skies, signifying the eventual victory of light over darkness. This festival is celebrated by one and all and is the true portrayal of the richness and vibrancy of Indian Hindu culture.

Burlington Mayor's Press Conference: Burlington City Hall 'Prevent Lead Poisoning' Poster Contest 10/11/2011

Lead poisoning is one of the most significant environmental health hazards affecting children in the United States. It is especially critical to address lead safety in areas with older housing stock, such as Vermont and Burlington. In an effort to inform and engage community children (ages 7-8) and their families, the Burlington Lead Program (BLP) has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington to educate kids about lead and lead poisoning. Education activities concluded with the children participating in an art contest that coincides with National Lead Poisoning Prevention month. Common Good Vermont: Vermont Cultural Data Project 10/07/2011

Common Good Vermont's Lauren-Glenn Davitian speaks with Alex Aldrich, Executive Director of the Vermont Arts Council about the Vermont Cultural Data Project. Part of a national initiative, the databank helps cultural organizations to track and measure their activities. The Vermont Cultural Data Project (Vermont CDP) is a powerful online management system designed to strengthen the arts and cultural sector. Now operating in 11 states and DC, the CDP is an emerging national standard that gathers reliable, longitudinal data on arts and cultural organizations.

The project is also supported by Pew Charitable Trusts, The Vermont Community Foundation and The Kresge Foundation. Read more here.

Artful Word: 150 Year Celebration of Rabindranath Tagore 10/01/2011

Community producer James Gero's video on Chitrangada: A Dance-Drama by Rabindranath Tagore. This dance-drama will be performed by a troupe of nine talented dancers from the wider Burlington area, in celebration of Tagore's 150th birthday. It tells the story of a Himalayan warrior-princess who must choose between the object of her affections and her destiny as protector of her people against an enemy invasion. The drama explores universal issues of feminism and equality.

Summer Video Production Internship - Applications Open

Town Meeting TV is hiring two paid interns to join our production team for the summer! The program will run from Monday, June 24th until Friday, August 16th (8 weeks). $17 an hour, approximately 8 hours per week. We are looking for folks who have basic or intermediate experience with video recording and editing on Adobe Premiere. Interns will work with the Town Meeting TV Co-Directors to pick stories or events that they would like to cover in our community, practice outreach skills, then shoot and edit video that will be broadcasted on Town Meeting TV's YouTube and cable channels. Interested applicants should send their resume and cover letter (including why they are interested in this position and any relevant experience) to Jordan at jmitchell@cctv.org.
