Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebrations: Civil Rights Panel - A Vision for Civil Rights in Vermont 01/16/2017

On January 16, 2017, ECHO, in partnership with the City of Burlington, will host the 5th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration.

This FREE EVENT is part of a nationwide initiative to make MLK Day a "day on, not a day off," in which communities engage their citizenry in meaningful service and reflection. Each year, adults and children gather to explore issues of diversity and inclusion through story, song, and conversation. This year, we are proud to highlight our community's youth and recognize their leadership in advancing social justice and eliminating racism as part of the City's "My Brother's Keeper" program.

Ethan Allen Homestead Enrichment Program: Leased Land and Other Ancient VT Laws 01/15/2017

New Hampshire charters to land that became Vermont required proprietors to set aside lots dedicated to the school, the church, the first settled minister, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG), among other beneficiaries. Each right might be 300 acres of land, and they were leased to private citizens, who paid a modest amount for the use of the land. Two hundred and fifty years later, lease lands are back in the news. Title and mortgage companies, confused by this archaic system of public lands, are balking at loaning money or insuring them.

Paul Gillies, a historian of Vermont legal history, will explain the origins, entanglements, case law, and history of lease lands on Sunday, January 15, 2017, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Gillies is the author of Uncommon Law, Ancient Roads, and Other Ruminations on Vermont Legal History, published in 2013 by the Vermont Historical Society, among other books, and spoke at the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum Lecture Series in 2013.

Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebrations: Greater Burlington Multicultural Center Presents Carol Moseley Braun 01/15/2017

Burlington celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the First Unitarian Universalist Society with keynote speaker Carol Moseley Braun, the first African American woman to be elected to the United States Senate.

About Carol Moseley Braun:

Carol Moseley Braun served in the United States Senate from 1993 to 1999 as a Democrat from Illinois. Born in Chicago in 1947, Moseley Braun came of age in the midst of the civil rights movement and pursued a career in law. She became an Illinois state representative in 1977 and then served four years as Recorder of Deeds for Cook County, Illinois, the first African American elected to a Cook County executive position.

In 1992 she defeated both the Democratic incumbent and the Republican challenger for a seat in the U.S. Senate, becoming the first female senator from Illinois and the first African American woman to serve in the Senate. As a senator, Moseley Braun sponsored progressive education bills and campaigned for gun control.

In 1999, she became the U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand, a position she held until 2001. Moseley Braun ran for the Democratic nomination for president in 2004, but she withdrew from the race, endorsing Howard Dean instead.

Bestselling author and environmental activist, Bill McKibben, will join Amy Goodman on stage at Chandler for an evening of motivating and provocative discussion. Bill McKibben is not a person you’d expect to find handcuffed in the city jail in Washington, D.C. But that’s where he spent three days in the summer of 2011, after leading the largest civil disobedience in thirty years to protest the Keystone XL pipeline. A few months later the protesters would see their efforts rewarded when President Obama agreed to put the project on hold. Bill McKibben is an author and environmentalist who in 2014 was awarded the Right Livelihood Prize, sometimes called the ‘alternative Nobel.’ His 1989 book ‘The End of Nature’ is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change, and has appeared in 24 languages; he’s gone on to write a dozen more books.
