Vermont Humanities Fall Conference: Why Do Stories Matter? Telling Lies - Storytelling and Negative Capability 11/14/2015

Welcome & Opening Remarks followed by Maria Tatar's "Telling Lies: Storytelling and Negative Capability." Vladimir Nabokov tells us that literature was born when a child came running home crying wolf and there was no wolf. The lies we tell in our cultural stories may transmit higher truths about the human condition, but just as often they send mixed messages and scrambled signals. Harvard professor Maria Tatar will investigate how “simple” stories like “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Bluebeard” challenge us to think harder as we try to decode the cultural.

Governor Peter Shumlin: Education Bill Act 46 11/10/2015

Six months after signing the historic education reform law known as Act 46, Gov. Peter Shumlin highlights its early success in sparking local conversations statewide about how to enhance educational quality for Vermont’s kids. The Governor makes the announcement at Essex High School a week after voters from the towns of Essex, Essex Junction, and Westford voted to streamline their governance structure, forming one unified district to serve 10 schools in the three communities. The unification was the first under Act 46 and reduces the number of schoolboards from five to one and superintendents from two to one.

The Governor is joined for the announcement by House Speaker Shap Smith, Chairman of the House Education Committee Dave Sharpe, Essex Rep. Tim Jerman, Education Secretary Rebecca Holcombe, local schoolboard chair Kim Gleason, Superintendents Mark Andrews and Judith DeNova, students, and others.
