Burlington Ward 6 NPA Meeting 04/01/2014

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to encourage citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies help improve communication between the citizens of Burlington and City government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Ward 6 meets the first Thursday of the month. Meeting place: Greek Orthodox Church 600 South Willard Street.

2014 Walk/Bike Summit 03/29/2014

A lot is being done statewide to make walking and biking in Vermont safer, more visible, respected and fun. MC Chapin Spencer, Director of Burlington Department of Public Works introduces Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger and Alan Cote of Sparta Synergy for opening remarks, then presents a panel ( Sue Minter from VTrans, Rep. Mollie Burke, and Noelle MaKay of VT Department of Economic, Housing & Community Affairs) to discuss local and statewide perspectives. Later, Keynote Caoline Sampanaro of Transportation Alternatives shares strategies for grassroot campaigns to transform streets and adopt sustainable transportation policy, followed by local success celebrations. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies facilitate communication between the citizens of Burlington and city government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Wards 4 & 7 meet the third Tuesday of the month. Meeting place: Robert E. Miller Community Center 130 Gosse Court.

Preservation Burlington: Corin Hirsch - Forgotten Drinks of Colonial New England 02/27/2014

Colonial New England was awash in ales, beers, wines, cider and spirits. Everyone from teenage farmworkers to our founding fathers imbibed heartily and often. Tipples at breakfast, lunch, teatime and dinner were the norm, and low-alcohol hard cider was sometimes even a part of children's lives. New England food and drinks writer Corin Hirsch explores the origins and taste of the favorite potations of early Americans and offers some modern-day recipes to revive them today in her book 'Forgotten Drinks of Colonial New England: From Flips and Rattle-Skulls to Switchel and Spruce Beer'.

Saint Michael's Student Labor Action Movement presents a panel discussion on Vermont Labor Struggles. Panelists include: George, Lovell, Coordinator of American Federation of State and Municipal Employees Council 93; Amanda Sheppard, Homecare Provider and member of Vermont Homecare United; Corey Mallon, a registered nurse in acute care, serving as a unit steward with Vermont Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals; Traven Leyshon, President of the Green Mountain Labor Council and a founder of the Vermont Workers' Center.
