Burlington Ward 6 NPA Meeting 11/07/2013

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to encourage citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies help improve communication between the citizens of Burlington and City government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Ward 6 meets the first Thursday of the month. Meeting place: Greek Orthodox Church 600 South Willard Street.

Common Good Vermont: Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food 10/24/2013

Kathleen Merrigan, Former Deputy Secretary of the USDA, will focus on local food and food insecurity during her visit to Vermont hosted by the Vermont Community Foundation.

Named by Time magazine as one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” in 2010, Merrigan has been a consistent champion for families, farmers, and the environment throughout her career, launching the USDA’s “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food,” overseeing the development of the USDA Organic standards in an earlier role at the USDA, and working for Senator Leahy as senior staff to the Senate Agriculture committee.

Merrigan will offer her perspective on where Vermont fits in the national picture on these issues, which are central to the Community Foundation’s Food and Farm Initiative.

Preservation Burlington: Bruce Seifer, Sustainable Communities 10/24/2013

Burlington has preserved many structures and neighborhoods which makes it a community that is the envy for many across the globe. Some buildings preserved include the Maltex Building on Pine Street (they made Maltex Breakfast Cereal), The Wells Richardson Building next to Bennington Potters (They made patent medicines during the turn of the century before the FDA set standards for how much alcohol can be in medicine!), and the building the show is being filmed in, 294 North Winooski Ave, the former Fassetts Bakery Building. Ron Wanamaker speaks with co-author of 'Sustainable Communities', Bruce Seifer. Communities around the world want to know how to build a viable economy. How is it done? Vermont Access Network (VAN): Education - Join the Conversation: Pre-K & Early Childhood Education 10/23/2013

Publicly funded prekindergarten education (Pre-K) provides access to a quality early education experience for over 6,000 of Vermont’s young children. Public Pre-K occurs in some of Vermont’s elementary schools and through partnerships with Head Start programs, child care centers or family-based care, or private preschools. Regardless of type of program, public Pre-K must meet high program standards, address the Vermont Early Learning Standards, and employ a licensed early childhood educator.

Author, Ron Tanner presentation/discussion about his experiences restoring a Victorian home after it was nearly destroyed during a ten year occupancy by a fraternity in Baltimore Maryland. Held at the Fletcher Free Library and co-sponsored by Preservation Burlington.

CCTV Receives NEH Grant to Support Community Archives

CCTV Center for Media & Democracy is pleased to announce receipt of a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Humanities Collections and Reference Resources grant alongside 32 peer archival institutions across the country.
