Designed to share the medical learning experience with our greater community, Community Medical School is a public lecture series featuring relevant topics presented by University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine/University of Vermont Medical Center faculty experienced with delivering scientific information in an engaging, easy-to-understand manner.

Burlington Board of Health: Burlington Board of Health 02/14/2019

The Board of Health coordinates foremost with the Code Enforcement Office, and then with other city and state offices and programs. The Board of Health reviews and approves all health order requests by the Health Officers and hears and decides the first level of appeal on such orders. The Board of Health may recommend health-related rules and regulations, ordinances and policies. The Board of Health cooperates with local and state organizations to provide public discussion and education. And finally, the Board of Health considers for recommendation to the Vermont Department of Health all applicants for city Health Officers.

Monthly meetings will occur on the second Thursday of each month at alternating locations. The meetings will begin at 6:30 PM with the duration depending on the agenda items.

All regular meetings will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Meeting dates, times and locations may be changed at the discretion of the Board. Occasional Special Meetings of the Board will be posted at least 24 hours in advance of meetings.

Nuclear Free Future: Nuclear Disasters - Nuclear Weapons, Power and Waste 02/08/2019

Alfred C. Meyer, of Physicians for Social Responsibility, and Kevin Kamps, Radioactive Waste Specialist of Beyond Nuclear, talk with host Margaret Harrington about the need to abolish nuclear weapons. The experts discuss the hazards of nuclear power, identifying it as counterproductive to eliminate climate change issues. They also give insight into the compounding problem of radioactive nuclear waste.

Addiction Recovery Channel: Emergency Department Peer Recovery Coaching Program 02/07/2019

This show highlights a truly innovative partnership between the University of Vermont Medical Center Emergency Department and the Recovery Coach Program at the Turning Point Center of Chittenden County. Guests Maureen Leahy and Cam Lauf join host/producer Ed Baker and explain how this partnership is designed to engage people with Substance Use Disorder at a “crisis moment”—the Emergency Room encounter.

Dr. Karen Randall describes some of the costs of legal marijuana in her community of Pueblo, Colorado, including marijuana psychosis, suicide, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, bad interactions with medications and CDB, homelessness, more drugs, illegal marijuana grows and more. She shows the increase in the homeless population and a picture of a raid on an illegal marijuana grow house in her neighborhood. Pueblo, Colorado did not have these problems prior to legalizing marijuana.
