Essex Memorial Day Parade Committee is proud to be the sponsor of the Annual Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service. The event brings the community of Essex Junction and Essex together to honor those men and women who served our country.

Artful Word: The Journey Continues: Lake Champlain Maritime Museum 05/31/2013

An ambitious tour schedule is underway for schooner Lois McClure in the 2013 season, including many new destinations. Special Project Developer Art Cohn created the thematic and interpretive message, 1813: The Story Continues. The shipbuilding races and naval battles of 1813 helped to determine the outcome of the war, and left a legacy of shipwrecks beneath the waters of the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River and Lake Champlain.

2013 Essex Memorial Day Preview 05/09/2013

Ed Von Sitas, member of the Essex Memorial Day Parade Committee and a Vietnam Veteran, speaks with Grand Marshall Stanley Spaulding, Korean War Veteran, Bob Wheeler, a Vietnam War Veteran and  Ed Daudlin, Post 6689 Commander and a Vietnam Veteran, on their service and the plans for the Essex Memorial Day Service and Parade. The 2013 Theme is 'Home of the Free - Because of the Brave'.  Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 24th, 7:30pm in the Essex Congregational Church.  Parade starts at 10am on Saturday, May 25th through the 5 corners. 

Ethan Allen Homestead Enrichment Program: Porches of Chittenden County: Character, Context, and Memories 05/05/2013

Presented by Tom Visser, University of Vermont, Director of the Vermont Historic Preservation Program.  Porches, some of the most delightful features of many buildings in Chittenden County, Vermont, will be the topic of the May 5th meeting of the Chittenden County Historical Society. The presenter, Prof. Thomas Visser, is the author of the recently published book, Porches of North America. His illustrated presentation will explore the character and historic context of many types of porches, drawing extensively on examples from Chittenden County and Vermont.

Conversation on Race Now -Listening to the Voices of Parents 04/25/2013

Conversation on Race Now (C.O.R.N.) invites community members in a listening session to the voices of Parents from our community, in facilitated dialogue
addressing their experiences in relationship to race/racism in their lives. (with audience participation).
Facilitated by: Kiah Ellis, Undergraduate student, pursuing a history/philosophy degree at UVM, Avid, competitive snowboarder, participating
member of " Voices of Youth Restorative Circle"
Keynote Guest Speaker: Robert L. Walsh, noted author, graduate of Colgate and MA from UVM, Bob retired from the USMC as Lt. Colonel,
served as a member of the Vermont House of Representatives, adjunct faculty at UVM, and taught Africa American Studies at South Burlington H.S. His life experience in these areas has afforded him a wide range of experience as related to racism in our state, country and throughout the military world. Ethan Allen Homestead Enrichment Program: Gypsies or Pirates? The Vermont Eugenics Survey 04/21/2013

Labeling traveling basket makers as “gypsies”, and people living in house boats as “Pirates”, the University of Vermont ran a science program (1925-36) used to identify thousands of defective, delinquent and dependent Vermonters. Many years later this program was deemed a pseudo-science. Judy Dow gives a brief history of the project as well as the historical trauma suffered by the Families who were targeted.

CCTV Center for Media & Democracy is pleased to announce receipt of a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Humanities Collections and Reference Resources grant alongside 32 peer archival institutions across the country.
