Gwyneth Cravens - The Truth About Nuclear Energy 01/20/2011

Concerned about the devastating impacts on public health and the environment caused by fossil-fuel combustion, environmental writer Gwyneth Cravens concludes that nuclear is the only large-scale, practical, environmentally friendly, nonpolluting energy source available. Her book 'Power to Save the World: The Truth About Nuclear Energy' documents her findings which are shared in this first 2011 Sheraton Economic Series presentation. The Sheraton Economic Series is sponsored by the Ethan Allen Institute, Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce, Vermont Business Magazine, Vermont Tiger, and the Vermont Economic Newsletter,True North Radio and is hosted by the Sheraton Burlington Conference Center.

Vermont Access Network (VAN): We Share Our World: Celebrating 30 Years of the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program 01/17/2011

Four speakers--all refugees--from Ethiopia, Somalia, Burma, and the Democratic Republic of Congo share their experiences of the countries they left behind and the challenges they have living in Vermont. This event was a program of the Vermont Historical Society in reflection of the resiliency of Martin Luther King, Jr. It took place at the Vermont History Center in Barre on January 17, 2011.

Discussion on Vote to Separate North and South Sudan 01/15/2011

Seven members of the Vermont Sudanese community discuss voting on the referendum on whether to separate the South and North of Sudan. Voting took place in locations across the U.S. for the Sudanese diaspora. Many of these speakers travelled to Washington D.C. while others traveled to Boston. The Will Miller Social Justice Lecture series will bring speakers to the UVM campus and the Burlington community to provide a continuing program of radical analyses of social, ecological and political concerns. The series is dedicated to Will Miller, Vermont’s activist philosopher and UVM Philosophy Professor for 35 years. Jihan Gearon works on the front lines of the global movement for climate justice. She discusses how social movements around the world will mobilize during the UN Climate talks in Cancun this December 2010.
