Burlington Ward 5 NPA Meeting 09/20/2012

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to empower citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies facilitate communication between the citizens of Burlington and city government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Ward5 meet Department of Public Works Building, 645 Pine Street.

The Vermont International Film Festival was born from the anti-nuclear movement in the 1985, making it the world’s oldest environmental and human rights film festival. Founded by two longtime peace and social justice activists, George and Sonia Cullinen, the inspiration for the festival came from the success of their 1981 film, From Washington to Moscow, which documented a Walk for Peace between two rural towns — Washington and Moscow, Vermont. The film won the UNESCO prize at the 1983 Hiroshima International Film Festival in Japan and taught the Cullinens that film and video could motivate people to become involved in their own communities and elsewhere in the world. Ward 6 meets the first Thursday of the month. Meeting place: Greek Orthodox Church 600 South Willard Street.

Vermont is My Home: Paul Connor, Bridport 08/28/2012

Funded by a grant from the Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council, the ambitious goal of the Vermont is my Home production is to increase the general public’s understanding of people with developmental disabilities as members of our communities.

Paul Connor is a well-liked and accepted fixture in his community. He plays in a Hockey league, shoots pool at a local pub and attends community dinners. In addition, he enjoys racquetball, ice fishing and working on his family farm. The oldest of seven children, Paul is known to a large network of neighbors and friends in his hometown. He has tremendous support for his independent functioning from his family.

Vermont is My Home: Nicole LeBlanc, Burlington 08/28/2012

Funded by a grant from the Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council, the ambitious goal of the Vermont is my Home production is to increase the general public’s understanding of people with developmental disabilities as members of our communities.

After high school, Nicole LeBlanc remained in her rural town and was isolated due to the lack of public transportation, work and educational opportunities. Nicole is a now a student in the SUCCEED program, a collaboration between the Howard Center and the University of Vermont. She has moved into her own apartment and travels frequently as a regional and national advocate for people with autism.

Vermont is My Home: Kyle Moriarty, Montpelier 08/28/2012

Funded by a grant from the Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council, the ambitious goal of the Vermont is my Home production is to increase the general public’s understanding of people with developmental disabilities as members of our communities.

Kyle Moriarity was unable to communicate with his parents, or anyone else, until 6th grade when he was introduced to facilitated communication. A recent graduate of Montpelier High School, Kyle is in a Transition to Work program. He works at Green Mountain Self Advocates, an advocacy organization for people with disabilities. His goal is to advocate for access to assistive technology for youth with disabilities.

Summer Video Production Internship - Applications Open

Town Meeting TV is hiring two paid interns to join our production team for the summer! The program will run from Monday, June 24th until Friday, August 16th (8 weeks). $17 an hour, approximately 8 hours per week. We are looking for folks who have basic or intermediate experience with video recording and editing on Adobe Premiere. Interns will work with the Town Meeting TV Co-Directors to pick stories or events that they would like to cover in our community, practice outreach skills, then shoot and edit video that will be broadcasted on Town Meeting TV's YouTube and cable channels.
