South Burlington Passes Budgets, Elects Newcomers
Fewer than 20% of South Burlington voters turned out on May 20th to pass a city budget of $19 million and school budget of $38 million. Voters also approved the use of sales tax revenue to fund a portion of the cost of adding six firefighters to the department. Residents also approved an increase in the disabled veteran’s property tax exemption, and voted against the continued use of bond funds to develop a wood-chip heating facility on school property (1,553 voted to stop, 945 to continue).
City Clerk Donna Kinville was uncontested for her next 3 year term. Mark Boucher was re-elected to the City Council for 3 years and newcomer Meaghan Emery defeated Tim Kaczmarek for a two-year term, 1,358-798.
Elizabeth Fitzgerald was re-elected to a two-year term as school director; Janine Allo, new to the board, gained the three-year seat by defeating Robert G. Diferdinando, 1,191-831.
