Ethan Allen Homestead Enrichment Program: Letters from Erastus - Anne D. Emerson 09/13/2015

Author Anne Emerson explores twenty-two letters written by her great-great-grandfather, Erastus Hopkins, to his daughters in the 1850’s and 1860’s. Buried for 150 years in the archives of the Massachusetts Historical Society, the letters became the driving force in the author’s quest to figure out who this forgotten man was. Along the way, they become a bridge for the author’s understanding of her own life story and her old New England family.

Ethan Allen Homestead Enrichment Program: Behind and Beyond the Black Snake - Gary Shattuck 08/16/2015

The story behind the 1808 killing of three men at the Ethan Allen Homestead sponsored by the actions of several Burlington area professional men who associated with the killers and then sought to keep their involvement secret.

 

 

Gary Shattuck is a historian, former federal prosecutor, and author of the definitive book on the event, Insurrection, Corruption & Murder in Early Vermont: Life on the Wild Northern Frontier. Gary Shattuck presents information concerning both the murders and additional background on the sponsors of this horrendous crime.

Ethan Allen Homestead Enrichment Program: The Historic Center of UVM 07/19/2015

Professor emeritus William Averyt discusses the growth of UVM around the Green, from Ira Allen's early project to create a university for the Republic of Vermont in the 1780s, up to the present. In addition to some of the more familiar buildings on campus, Professor Averyt looks at some of the lesser known structures such as the long-disappeared President's House and the Catlin-Johnson House.

Ethan Allen Homestead Enrichment Program: Coin Silver in Vermont - David Perrin 06/21/2015

Due to a scarcity of silver in early America, silver smiths often melted down coins to obtain the raw materials needed to produce silver spoons; hence the term “coin silver”. David Perrin, author of “Coin Silver – Is it a Vermont Mark?”, discusses the origin of the process. Emphasis is placed on Vermont silver spoons made in early Burlington. This talk is of interest to both history buffs and those who enjoy collectibles.
