Albania and the United States: An Endearing and Enduring Friendship 04/05/2018

The Vermont Council for World Affairs (VCWA) welcomes the Albanian Ambassador Floreta Faber to Vermont. Ambassador Faber speaks about the friendship and partnership between Albania and the United States. Opportunities to deepen that friendship are discussed, including tourism, trade, educational and cultural exchanges, development assistance, and the Peace Corps.

In 1919 the United States supported Albanian independence from the Ottoman Empire. To this day, President Woodrow Wilson is remembered and honored for standing-up against the proposed partition of Albania. Although relations soured in 1945 with the emergence of a Communist regime, diplomatic relations were re-established in 1991. The United States has supported Albania's transition to a democracy and market-oriented economy.

Today, Albania is a NATO member and an active supporter of U.S. anti-terrorism efforts. Albanian immigrants first arrived in the U.S. more than a century ago, settling mostly in the Boston area. Albanians now live in communities across the country, including Burlington. Pro-American sentiment is strong and widespread among the Albanian population.

The Peacemaker: A Film by James Demo 02/03/2018

"The Peacemaker" follows international peacemaker Padraig O'Malley, who helps make peace for others but struggles to find it for himself.

James Demo created his film "The Peacemaker" about the life and work of international peace negotiator and conflict resolver Padraig O'Malley after hearing his story in the Boston bar The Plough and the Shares. They are traveling with the film which will be premiered to the world on Friday, February 9 at New York City's Cinema Village.

Celebration of Nobel Peace Prize to International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons 11/05/2017

John F. Reuwer, MD, presents an in-depth talk about nuclear weapons to an audience at the Friends Meeting House in Burlington, Vermont. Dr. Reuwer explains why the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. He places this win in the context of the anti-nuclear movement, in which he has been active as a member of the Security Committee of the Physicians for Social Responsibility. Dr. Reuwer's presentation is a must-see for those who are just waking up to the most immediate danger our civilization faces - the threat of nuclear holocaust - and to old timers who have lived in this nightmare since August 6, 1945.
