Greater Burlington Women's Forum: Muslim Girls Making Change 03/02/2018

Activist-performer youth slam poetry group Muslim Girls Making Change (MGMC) will present their powerful words in a performance at the Greater Burlington Women's Forum on Friday, March 2. These local high school stars, Kiran Waqar, Hawa Adam, Lena Ginawi, and Balkisa Abdikadir, are dedicated to social justice through poetry. Tired of having their voices ignored by older generations, they turned to slam poetry to be heard and to make a change. Since forming MGMC, these girls have competed at international levels, won numerous awards, performed widely, and help lead several local and national initiatives. Their poetry tackles stereotypes and misconceptions about their faith, identity, and fashion.

FOCUS: The Irish Woman's Voice in Poetry with Angela Patten 03/01/2018

In conjunction with the Burlington Irish Heritage Festival, Angela Patten, Dublin born poet and senior lecturer at the University of Vermont, visits with Margaret Harrington on the Channel 17 TV series FOCUS. Angela Patten reads selections from her three poetry collections: "In Praise of Usefulness," "Reliquaries," and "Still Listening." She also reads from her prose memoir "High Tea at a Low Table: Stories from an Irish Childhood." Angela and Margaret talk about the Irish woman's voice in poetry and read selections from "The White Page / An Bhileog Bhan: 20th Century Irish Women Poets."

Host Margaret Harrington talks with Burlington, Vermont, poet Greg Delanty who reads selections from his new book "Selected Delanty." The poems embrace a four-decade span in the life of the poet and follow his experiences as an emigrant from Ireland, an immigrant in America, a son, a father, a lover, and a friend. With spectacular intensity, Delanty invites the reader/listener into his world providing insights and revelations. Delanty cares about the fate of the earth both as a poet and an activist with 350Vermont.
 

Art & Activism - The Poetry Show: HOME - Art at the Fletcher Free Library 11/07/2017

The November 2017 episode of The Poetry Show focuses on HOME. Host Kylie Daly shares her passion about two projects that are on display in the Fletcher Free Library this winter, "Voices of Home" by Corrine Yonce and "Imagining Home" by Alison Cannon. Kylie also showcases a piece by local astrologer Katy Hellman called "Full Moon in Taurus."
