An Inside Look at Mass Incarceration 08/07/2019

The Fletcher Free Library hosts a presentation by Daimeyon Williams that walks through the ideology of The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration and the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) Lynching Memorial and relates them to mass incarceration, growing up African American in Vermont, and the implications of race on Vermonters as a whole.

"Located on the site of a former warehouse where black people were enslaved in Montgomery, Alabama, this narrative museum uses interactive media, sculpture, videography and exhibits to immerse visitors in the sights and sounds of the domestic slave trade, racial terrorism, the Jim Crow South, and the world’s largest prison system. The public forum portion of the Burlington School Board's Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee Meeting. The public forum rules were suspended to allow for a discussion of an incident involving the removal of Burlington school students of color from a GMT bus during an afterschool ride.

Diversity Conference 2019 Keynote - Jim St. Germain 04/12/2019

The Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center hosts this annual Diversity Conference. This year's keynote speaker is Jim St. Germain.

Jim St. Germain is the co-founder of Preparing Leaders of Tomorrow (PLOT), a nonprofit organization that provides mentoring to at-risk youth; and a board member with the National Juvenile Defender Center. He works as a residential care advocate for the City of New York, and was appointed by President Obama to the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Jim lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his son, Caleb.

This task force was convened to discuss the "Everyone Loves a Parade" mural in downtown Burlington, Vermont after members of the public raised concerns with the content and context of this mural in regards to racial representation. The task force will meet and make recommendations about how to address community needs.

Paul Yoon is the Senior Advisor for Strategic Diversity Research and Assessment at the University of Vermont, Burlington. He is also a former Assistant Principal of Tuttle Middle School and a former lecturer on the History of Racism at Boston College.
