Persistence of Slavery in Early Vermont 03/14/2013

University of Vermont professor Harvey Amani Whitfield discusses the tensions between slavery and freedom in early Vermont history. His research indicates that the end of slavery in Vermont was messy, disorderly, and contradictory and that various forms of bondage persisted in Vermont well after the 1777 abolition of adult slavery.

Professor Whitfield’s areas of research are the black population in the Maritime colonies and Vermont. In 2006, he published Blacks on the Border: The Black Refugees in British North America, 1815-1860. His article, “African Americans in Burlington, Vermont, 1880-1900,” was published in Vermont History in 2007.

Burlington High School Students Meet to Discuss Racism 04/19/2012

A group of Burlington High School students spent the day protesting racism at the school and in their community by holding signs and speaking out in front of the school. After school they met with Burlington Free Press reporter Molly Walsh and Editor Mike Townsend to discuss recent articles published about them and conversation in the community about achievement, test-scores and racism. Author Jeffrey Haas - The Assassination of Fred Hampton, Chicago Black Panther 08/11/2011

Fred Hampton, leader of the Chicago Black Panthers, was killed while he lay sleeping during a police raid of his apartment in December, 1969. Mark Clark, another Panther, was also killed, and four other Panthers were shot. Jeffery Haas and his partners at the People's Law Office spent the next 13 years representing the families in a civil suit. In 2004, Haas began writing about the life and death of Fred Hampton, culminating in the book, 'The Assassination of Fred Hampton: How the FBI and Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther' which attempts to capture the mood and political tensions of that moment. Haas speaks to the time and issues at a book signing.

UVM Student Takeover of Waterman Building: Reflections on the 1991 Waterman Takeover 04/23/2011

The 1991 Takeover, along with its 1988 predecessor, were instrumental in forming the University of Vermont's policies and initiatives regarding diversity, multiculturalism and inclusion. Changes that have occurred since the takeovers include, among other things, five Presidential Commissions, the appointment of a Chief Diversity Officer, a six-credit diversity requirement and a student body that is comprised of 10% ALANA students.This panel discussion and other speakers will consider the historical context for the 1991 Waterman Takeover, and examine the changes that have come about at UVM in the past twenty years.
