Nonprofit organizations are vital to making meaningful change in the world and they have significant amounts of untapped potential in their data. Unfortunately, many nonprofits lack the strategies, skills, and guidance to make better decisions based on their data.

About the Presenter

We are pleased to present Steve MacLaughlin, Vice President of Data & Analytics at Blackbaud, and author of the current Amazon best seller “Data Driven Nonprofits”. Steve brings his 20+ years of experience driving innovation with a broad range of companies, government institutions, and nonprofit organizations. Learn how to use a variety of data access tools available online at census.gov that can quickly provide a snapshot of your community. Alexandra Barker, Data Dissemination Specialist with the U.S. Census Bureau, shows us how to use easy to generate reports developed for journalists that quickly visualizes U.S. Census data, including QuickFacts, American FactFinder Data Profiles, Interactive Maps, and Census Reporter.

Common Good Vermont: Consciousness & Social Policy 02/23/2017

Dr. Edwards Smith is a western and AyruVedic doctor and leading practitioner of Transcendental Meditation (TM) as a practice for personal resilience and community well-being. Dr. Smith served in active duty with the U.S. Army Medical Corps, ran the Maharishi College of Vedic Medicine in Albuquerque, and is widely published on subjects ranging from pharmacology and rheumatology to Transcendental Medication. Based on his experience with war veterans and community indicators of well-being, he believes that TM and TM-Shidhi programs are human resource based technologies that offer immense potential for the health care system of any country.

We discuss his experience with Transcendental Meditation and how it can be used to address some of Vermont's most vexing public issues.

Common Good Vermont: Open Data: Vermont Department of Health 01/10/2017

There is a growing movement to open local, state, federal, and shared data sources to provide communities with information about critical resources such as affordable housing, public safety, and environmental protection. The series will discuss how open data can help collective impact initiatives through the presentation of working Vermont examples, national initiatives, and a look at what is ahead for this important trend in sharing community knowledge to unlock new solutions for the common good.

The Vermont Department of Health's David Grass, Environmental Health Surveillance Chief, and Mallory Staskus, Public Health Analyst, will discuss and demo multiple VDH Open Data resources that cover a variety of public health topics, including Data Explorer and Scorecard as well as discussing the Environmental Public Health Tracking Program and Healthy Vermonters 2020.

There is a growing movement to open local, state, federal and shared data sources to provide communities with information about critical resources such as affordable housing, public safety and environmental protection. The series will discuss how open data can help collective impact initiatives through the presentation of working Vermont examples, national initiatives, and a look at what is ahead for this important trend in sharing community knowledge to unlock new solutions for the common good.

The Burlington Police Department's Eric Fowler, Crime Analyst and Jackie Corbally, Opioid Policy Manager will demonstrate how they are using open data sets to assess the scope of the opiate epidemic and guide local public safety efforts.
