Description
On October 30, 2016, over 250 farmers, food lovers and leaders in the organic movement came together in East Thetford, Vermont, to speak out against hydroponically produced foods being allowed to be certified as organic by the USDA's National Organic Program since the organic standards are based on stewardship of the soil. US Senator Patrick Leahy, US Representative Peter Welch, author and farmer Eliot Coleman and others made forceful arguments on why the NOP should "keep the soil in organic". The National Organic Standards Board will be voting on this issue in mid-November of 2016, but concerned citizens can be active on this issue well after the initial vote.
