Description

For several decades, the City of South Burlington has moved toward development of a central district called City Center, located around Market Street between Dorset Street and Hinesburg Road.

Late in 2015, Spotlight Vermont, a performing arts academy located within the City Center district, approached the City with the idea of developing a creative arts complex in the district.

In 2016, a group of local business, education, and community leaders began meeting to consider the possibilities of such a project. A Vermont non-profit corporation, South Burlington City Center for the Arts was established with the goal of realizing the dream of a creative arts facility that would serve as a beacon of excitement and learning for City Center, South Burlington, and Vermont.

What could City Center Arts include? Here's a few ideas:

600 Seat Performance / Meeting Space. Currently, the inventory of performance space in Northwest Vermont is missing a mid size venue. A theater of this size, roughly 40% of the capacity of Burlington's Flynn Theatre, would be perfect for a variety of programs for which current venues are either too large or too small. This space could be used for resident companies, smaller touring shows, film, music, festivals, live streaming of events, commercial meetings, and civic use.

150 seat multi-use studio. This space would be used for virtually any type of meeting, performance, and rehearsal needs imaginable. Retractable seating would allow quick conversion of the space into a large open room.

Arts Education Facility - Dance studios, arts education classrooms, media, musical theater, new media all designed to increase availability and quality of arts education in the area.

Nearly every company and every household in Burlington buys internet access and there is overwhelming bipartisan support for keeping the internet free and open, including from Vermont Congressman Welch, as well as, Senators Sanders and Leahy. Despite this, the FCC is charging ahead with a plan to roll-back these crucial protections, giving large ISPs new controls over what customers see, hear, and do online.
