History

Sponsored by the Vermont Commission on Native American Affairs (VCNAA) in collaboration with the UVM Anthropology Department. Opening presentations will cover the mission, scope of responsibilities, and current projects of the Native American Affairs Commission; recent archaeology for the Champlain Bridge project; and contemporary Native identity. Natives and non-Natives are invited to participate and share their thoughts during the extensive question, answer, and suggestion period. Co-presenters for the event are UVM’s Native American & Indigenous Peoples club (NAIP) and the UVM Consulting Archaeology Program. Co-sponsored by Anthropology, VCNAA, ALANA, and NAIP.
 

The Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program presents, 'The Art of Arrival'. The Burlington International Airport is the Ellis Island of Vermont The Art of Arrival includes paintings of refugees in Burlington by Janet McKenzie and refugees speaking about their memorable experiences arriving in Vermont. 

Kate Kenny, Program Historian, UVM Consulting Archaeology Program presents a lively talk about Burlington’s Old North End’s forgotten cemetery, sharing information she has uncovered about the Cantonment, the unmarked cemetery and several artifacts of military origin. 

The area of Abyei is located in the center of Sudan between the north and south, two regions of Sudan in conflict.  In July of 2009 the Hague Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled on the boundaries of Abyei.  Now the people of Abyei will vote on whether to be part of the autonomous South Sudan government or the Northern government.  This area has a rich and complicated political history as well as oil resources that further complicate the political process.

In October of 2009 Sudanese refugees living in the northeast of the United States gathered in Burlington, VT to celebrate the Hague ruling.  The people gathered represent various ethnic and political groups speaking English, Arabic and Dinka.
