CVOEO and Vermont Folklife Launch Traveling Exhibit - In our words, in our community 05/13/2023

From CVOEO and Vermont Folklife:

"In Our Words, In Our Community" is a collaborative public arts and humanities exhibit created by Vermont Folklife and photographer Macaulay Lerman, in partnership with the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity, that amplifies the voices of our neighbors experiencing the complex dynamics of homelessness, food insecurity, and economic challenges. This exhibit is guided by direct input from a group of Vermonters and the social service workers who aim to address their daily needs.

"In Our Words, In Our Community" opens a window into the wide range of lived experiences in our region. Vermont has the second-highest per capita rate of people experiencing homelessness in the United States. This statistic reflects a painful and difficult fact–as Vermonters we all face economic injustice because we are one community. None of us succeed until we all succeed. Through "In Our Words, In Our Community" we work to challenge well-worn narratives about poverty, and to foster a deeper understanding of the experiences and perspectives of those who are often overlooked.

Host Meghan O'Rourke interviews Sam Kann, Organizer of the Plex Arts Festival happening on Saturday, May 20th. Plex Arts Festival is a new, grassroots, immersive arts event in Burlington's Old North End that will take place on the evening of May 20th. The festival focuses on experimental and contemporary work. All art forms are welcome - dance, music, sculpture, tattoo art, food, comedy, pottery, theater, poetry, painting, crafts, video art, and other cross-disciplinary creative projects.

Also discussing regional assemblies coming up, community meetings coming up to continue to organize, and details on the community Soccer Tournament.

Vermont Interfaith Action: Vermont Interfaith Action Declaration of Inclusion from Municipalities 05/10/2023

From VIA:

Vermont Interfaith Action (VIA) has been partnering with a group of concerned Vermonters, led by Al Wakefield, to persuade every municipality in the state to sign onto a Declaration of Inclusion (DOI) to ensure a warm, welcome, and open attitude toward all Vermonters and potential Vermonters. VIA's Racial Justice/Economic Opportunities Local Organizing Ministry is reaching out to congregations in many municipalities to ask them to persuade their town managers and selectboards to adopt the resolution.

As of April 5, 2023, 105 towns and cities (out of 247), home to 62% of Vermont’s population, have signed the DOI. That’s an accomplishment to celebrate!

Join us for a Celebratory Action on Wed, May 10th from 7 to 8:30 pm at College Street Congregational Church in Burlington (265 College St.), or as a hybrid event on Zoom (click here to register). Each municipality will be recognized for this first step, and we’ll have information on how to follow up with even more concrete actions. Let’s work together to ensure that Vermont will become known, and in fact be, the most welcoming and safe state in the country for all people.
