2012 New Years Greetings from CCTV Center for Media and Democracy

December 28, 2011

Happy New Year from CCTV Center for Media & Democracy!

Thank you for a productive and inspiring year of local TV, nonprofit video and social change across VT.  Looking back, our staff reflects on what we were able to accomplish together, with our volunteer producers, municipal partners, nonprofit leaders and loyal viewers. Here are some highlights from Channel 17/Town Meeting TV, CCTV Productions & Common Good Vermont, the top programs watched online plus some early events to look for in 2012!

Field Producer Kevin Harms enjoyed "seeing the new control room up and running the first time. The new equipment will help CCTV and Channel 17 maintain high production values well into the 21 century."

Channel 17 Playback Coordinator, Tuija Lindell went back to 2006 for this memory. "One of my favorite moments was when I video taped Barak Obama's speech at UVM's Ira Allen Chapel in 2006. He had given a powerful speech at the Democratic Convention in 2004 so everybody was talking about him. Little did I know that one day he'd be the president of the U.S.A."

Production Coordinator Rob Reiber appreciates "the good and well intentioned people willing to serve their community, whether it be on local boards/councils or as a state official/legislator. This is especially brought to light during Channel 17's election coverage."

Executive Director, Lauren-Glenn Davitian choose two highlights "My favoritemoment (among so many) was hosting the Vermont Nonprofit Conference 2011 on VIT. Common Good Vermont connected with 150 nonprofit leaders across the state using interactive TV. Not one person said the technology got in the way of learning how to be an effective organization!"  another good one from Channel 17 was "Watching Michelle Penca and Joel Najman hosting Town Meeting 2011!"

From his position as Archivist (organizing and cataloging years of community video) Nat Ayer is excited to see Channel 17 as a community resource. "Judge Ben is back! It is 'wild' how New North End NPA representatives come in and do Every part of their show production, Artful Word's James Gero continues to pour out videos every week, the new Somali Bantu Association show in MaiMai, the live caucuses, the shows about Burlington's occupations....."

CommonGood coordinator and Channel 17 field producer, Nick Carter's favorite moment was a "Tie between Burlington Caucus Coverage & recording the Occupy BTV General Assembly Meeting. Why a tie? Both of these events occurred around the same time and what really makes them my favorite programs to be a part of is that both represent CCTV/Channel 17's commitment to gavel-to-gavel coverage and free speech. Whereas one event involved a mainstream, political entity and the other a newly formed social movement, both events represented a political body's decision making process and we were there to capture them in their entirely for the public good. "

Outreach coordinator and Trainer,"Meghan O'Rourke's "favorite moment in working with a community producer was laying out post-it notes to show how a timeline works in non-linear editing.  I was learning a new way to teach and he was getting it clear and produced a great program in the end."
