Town Meeting TV Community Producer Receives Hometown Media Award for Racial Justice and Civil Rights Programming

July 18, 2023

Town Meeting TV, Chittenden County government access channel housed at CCTV, proudly celebrates community producer Reverend Mark Hughes on receiving the “Racial Justice and Civil Rights Programming" award in the Independent Producer category at the 2023 Hometown Media Awards for his monthly show The Juxtaposition.

Presented at the Alliance for Community Media conference, the Hometown Media Awards celebrate excellence in community programming produced during the previous year. Mark's outstanding episode titled "Hiding Behind Objectivity," which originally aired on Town Meeting TV, captured the attention of judges and stood out among a competitive field of almost 1,000 entries.

The Juxtaposition serves as a powerful platform for Hughes to engage viewers in live conversations about the challenges and experiences of Black Vermonters while striving for positive change within the community. With his thought-provoking content and impactful storytelling, Mark has fostered a space that addresses critical issues and encourages viewers to challenge conventional perspectives.

The award-winning episode, "Hiding Behind Objectivity," featured Vincent Mitchell, Director of Student Culture at the Vermont Racial Justice Alliance, as a guest. Together, Hughes and Mitchell delved into the persistence of systemic racism and questioned the prevailing beliefs and actions surrounding racial justice in today's society.

"I'm proud to bring the Racial Justice and Civil Rights Programming Independent Producer Award home to Vermont. These next level discussions on systemic racism are an outgrowth of the work that we continue in eradicating systemic racism in Vermont," said Rev. Mark Hughes.
