From Burlington Department of Public Works:
Burlington was a pioneer in establishing a residential recycling program in the early 1990's. Since 2018, the City has evaluated the possibility of different service models with an eye toward sustainability, convenience and cost. This largely stems from a 2018 City Council resolution directing DPW to evaluate a consolidated collection model whereby all 3 waste streams could be picked up by the same operator(s) and condensing the # of days to do so - limiting truck traffic, emissions and inconvenience. There were a series of public meetings in 2020 and 2021, a public survey and public communications about adopting a new model. This effort was paused.
With the recent launch of the ModernGov initiative - to streamline City services, find cost efficiencies and move government services into the 21st century, we have resumed looking at a new path forward for solid waste collection.
