City of Burlington Named a White House TechHire City 03/09/2016

BTV Ignite Executive Director Michael Schirling and Mayor Miro Weinberger announce the City of Burlington has been named a White House TechHire community, part of a multi­sector White House initiative to link area employers with Burlingtonians, growing the local tech workforce and empowering community members with the skills they would need for well­paying jobs in innovation and technology.

The City of Burlington and BTV Ignite will partner with local educational institutions and employers to train and employ 75 tech workers in 2016 and 400 tech workers through 2020. Key employers, workforce intermediaries, and training partners include the Vermont HITEC Institute for American Apprenticeship at Burlington College, Champlain College, the University of Vermont (UVM), Vermont Technical College, Community College of Vermont, the UVM Medical Center, the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Vermont Technology Alliance.

Burlington Mayor Weinberger, BTV Ignite and the Ignite Partners, VT HITEC, and a variety of employers and technical educators and trainers discuss this exciting designation and initiative.

Governor Peter Shumlin: Child Savings Accounts 02/16/2016

Gov. Peter Shumlin, business, community, and education leaders make the case for state funding of a college savings account for every child born in Vermont. In his State of the State Address, the Governor proposed funding Child Savings Accounts (CSAs) by increasing Vermont’s mutual fund registration fee – which is currently the lowest in New England.

Vermont’s CSA program would establish a higher education savings account for every child born or adopted in Vermont. Each child will receive $250 at birth and low-income children will receive an additional $250, for a total of $500. Even this modest amount can greatly increase rates of college enrollment and graduation. Research shows that a savings account of just a few hundred dollars can increase by three times the likelihood that a low-income student will enroll in college and by four times the likelihood that they will graduate.  The CSA program would cost approximately $2.25 million per year. To pay for it, the Governor has been soliciting private philanthropic donations. In July, the Governor accepted $25,000 donation from President and CEO of Subaru of New England Ernie Boch Jr.

Partnership for Change: Creating a Learning Community 12/01/2015

Guest host Barrie Silver speaks with Josepha Austin, a special education teacher at Burlington High School, Sparks, Director of Equity for the Burlington School District, Ella Causer, a junior at Burlington High School, and Key Nguyen, a junior at Winooski Middle/High School on an October 2015 trip by 24 educators and students from Burlington and Winooski High Schools to New York City on an education innovation tour sponsored by the Partnership for Change and facilitated by I.D.E.A - the Institute for Democratic Education in America. The goals for the tour were for participants to: (1) see "examples in action" of school programs, systems, and learning environments similar to those we are aiming to develop in Winooski and Burlington; and (2) bring back ideas, resources, and insights to share and apply in our own school communities. The tour was designed with the aim of creating a learning community among participants so that they can support each other in bringing what they experience back home.

Governor Peter Shumlin: Education Bill Act 46 11/10/2015

Six months after signing the historic education reform law known as Act 46, Gov. Peter Shumlin highlights its early success in sparking local conversations statewide about how to enhance educational quality for Vermont’s kids. The Governor makes the announcement at Essex High School a week after voters from the towns of Essex, Essex Junction, and Westford voted to streamline their governance structure, forming one unified district to serve 10 schools in the three communities. The unification was the first under Act 46 and reduces the number of schoolboards from five to one and superintendents from two to one.

The Governor is joined for the announcement by House Speaker Shap Smith, Chairman of the House Education Committee Dave Sharpe, Essex Rep. Tim Jerman, Education Secretary Rebecca Holcombe, local schoolboard chair Kim Gleason, Superintendents Mark Andrews and Judith DeNova, students, and others.
