Migrant Justice Freedom For Farmworkers Rally 04/24/2025

Rally organized by Migrant Justice, a Vermont-based, grassroots human rights organization founded and led by immigrant farmworkers.

Community supporters will march to call for the release of eight farmworkers detained Monday night in Franklin County, Vermont by U.S. Border Patrol agents. The arrest of workers on the dairy farm where they live and work has sparked condemnation and widespread national coverage. Supporters launched a petition Wednesday urging immigration court to release the detainees.

On the evening of April 21st, armed Border Patrol agents entered a Vermont dairy farm and detained eight farmworkers. This is the largest single immigration arrest of farmworkers – and one of the largest worksite arrests – in recent Vermont history. The eight workers are now held in detention and at risk of deportation.

Jesús, Juan, Luis, Urillas, Max, Adrian, José, and Dani are all dairy workers living and working in Franklin County, Vermont. Ranging from 22 to 41 years old, they came to Vermont to work on a dairy farm, searching for a better life for themselves and their families. For this, they are now being held behind bars.

This episode focuses on how we can change our approach towards acculturation from an “assimilation” based system to an “integration” based system that respects the cultural heritage and dignity of immigrants entering the United States. We meet with Tamara Parks, who has been a teacher and principal for nearly a decade, and is currently serving as the Director of the Multilingual program through the Essex Westford School District (EWSD). We will be exploring Tamara’s journey as a first generation immigrant to the United States, herself, and how that experience has informed her work in the public education system. We will be discussing a range of peacebuilding topics, such as postcolonialism, multiculturalism, and building peace through inclusive practices that promote equity and understanding across cultures and communities.

Vermont League of Voters of Vermont - What is Non-Citizen Voting? 02/18/2023

In Vermont, the cities of Winooski and Montpelier allow non-citizen residents to vote in local elections. Both cities undertook a long, complicated process to gain that right for their non-citizen residents. Burlington will consider a question to approve non-citizen voting at Town Meeting Day on Tuesday, March 7.

Marguerite Adelman, League of Women Voters of Vermont and Chair of the Non-Citizen Voting Committee, presents information about the two Vermont towns that currently have All Resident Voting, historical facts about non-citizen voting, what is happening in other states and nationally with non-citizen voting, and arguments for and against non-citizen voting.

The League of Women Voters monitors non-citizen voting across the United States, helps non-citizens register to vote in Winooski and Montpelier, and presents educational programs across Vermont on this topic.
