Henrietta Szold was one of the most important Jewish leaders of the 20th century. Her long life, from 1860 to 1945, spanned some of the most turbulent years in modern history. The events of that time shaped the lives of millions of people and are woven into the fabric of Szold’s life story.

Long-time OZ member Linda Kopper, who serves as President of Hadassah Vermont, explores the “two lives” of Henrietta Szold, and discusses how her legacy lives on today.

Zvi Jankelowitz, the Yiddish Book Center’s Director of Institutional Advancement, shares highlights of “Yiddish: A Global Culture”, the Center’s new permanent exhibition, and explains how the Center is at the forefront of technological advances, ensuring the accessibility of Yiddish books to Yiddish and non-Yiddish readers. Zvi shares clips from the Wexler Oral History Project, a growing collection of more than 1,200 video interviews about Yiddish language and culture — and also gives us a glimpse of what the future of Yiddish looks like for the 21st Century.

VICII: Anti-Semitism at UVM? A Constitutional Analysis of Louis Brandeis Center Complaint Against the University of Vermont 10/25/2022

In October 2021, the Louis Brandeis Center at the University of Vermont made a complaint against the University alleging that the University was not protecting Jewish students against anti-Semitic discrimination, harassment, and assaults. After an investigation conducted by the University and President Suresh Garimella, the President defended the University against the allegations of anti-Semitism.

These allegations of anti-Semitism did not die. With the Complaint, demands have been made, among others, that “UVM must adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance Working Definition of Anti-Semitism.” The Louis Brandeis Center also asked The University of Vermont to issue a statement denouncing anti-Semitism in all its forms and recognizing that Zionism is a key component of Jewish identity for many students at UVM.”

Sacred Space Through the Lens of History 06/05/2019

Barrie Knapp speaks about the changes that have taken place in the Ahavath Gerim Synagogue interior since the building's construction in 1885, and how each congregation that has worshiped in the space -- including the newly established Ruach haMaqom -- has left a mark on the 134-year-old sanctuary that's located in Burlington's Old North End.

Knapp recently graduated from the University of Vermont with a bachelor's degree in art history. For an independent study research project, she studied the early 20th-century Jewish immigration in Burlington and will share some of her findings on how the community's various liturgical shifts are reflected in Burlington's synagogues.

Ohavi Zedek Synagogue invites you to an extraordinary afternoon with scholars Imam Abdullah Antepli and Yossi Klein Halevi as they present "Across the Abyss: How a former anti-semite and a former Jewish extremist are changing the Muslim-Jewish Relationship."

While growing up in Turkey, Abdullah Antepli read anti-Semitic texts and saw Jews as evil. While growing up in Brooklyn, Yossi Klein Halevi, the son of a Holocaust survivor, was attracted to the militant politics of the Jewish far-right. Today, they run a revolutionary program, the Muslim Leadership Initiative, that is changing the way Muslims and Jews understand and relate to each other.
