On the Waterfront: Interview with Orly Yadin about the Vermont International Film Festival 2022 08/17/2022

Mariah Riggs interviews Orly Yadin from VTIFF.

Orly Yadin, Executive Director of VTIFF since Jan 2012, is a filmmaker and producer of both documentaries and animation films and series. Prior to making films, she was a film researcher on historical programmes and since 2001 has been Managing Director of Footage Farm – an archival footage collection. Orly has also taught documentary film history and theory in universities in England and at Burlington College. In 1995 she co-founded and ran Halo Productions specializing in animation films. Many of Halo’s short films won international awards at festivals, and one, Silence, was shortlisted for the Academy Awards. Orly became a VT resident in 2004 and has been a US citizen since 2010.

This year's festival will take place October 21-30, 2022. Located at the Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center with some virtual options and a satellite venue at The Savoy Theater in Montpelier.

Lost, Found and Remixed - Panel Discussion 10/12/2013

A panel discussion with screening of clips, geared toward filmmakers as well as the general public, looks at many aspects of repurposing footage for new uses. With Alice Apley, Executive Director of Documentary Educational Resources (co-sponsor of the symposium), filmmaker Caroline Martel, an internationally renowned award-winning documentary artist (Phantom Of The Operator, Wavemakers), Sandra Forman, entertainment lawyer (Eyes on the Prize), Rick Prelinger and Adrian Wood. As part of the symposium VTIFF is excited to launch the GVM – Second Time Around initiative, announcing seed money for restoring and digitizing older Vermont-made films. Surviving Plenty - Archival Filmmaking in the Age of Mass Production 10/12/2013

Money, patience and courage are no longer necessities for filmmakers choosing to work with archives. While it can still be a struggle to access archival material, vast resources are now freely available for viewing (and often, reuse). But freedom brings new challenges. How can career mediamakers thrive in an age of mass authorship and distributed creativity? What emerging modes of archival work offer the greatest promise? And how can we best use archival material to make works that plumb moving image history so as to propel it forward? Rick Prelinger explores these and other issues in an image-rich talk that includes audience discussion. Rick Prelinger, an archivist, writer and filmmaker, founded Prelinger Archives, whose collection of 60,000 advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur films was acquired by the Library of Congress in 2002 after 20 years’ operation. How to Find Funding and an Audience, For Your Independent Film Production with Cynthia Close 10/23/2011

Cynthia Close, Executive Director and currently President of Documentary Educational Resources, (DER – for over 43 years, a successful distributor of documentary film to the international broadcast, educational and consumer markets) has conducted workshops, served on pitch panels and festival juries, worldwide and mentored many filmmakers through the difficult and often confusing process of taking an idea and turning it into a successful, feature documentary film. She will discuss the process of presenting yourself and your project to funders while also building an audience. She is currently acting as fiscal sponsor for over 40 projects that are “in production” and managed grants from major funders including the NEA, NEH, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, ITVS, LEF Foundation, Sloan Foundation and many others.
