Greater Burlington Women's Forum: Real Talk - Young People & Healthy Relationships 04/30/2019

Are you curious about what dating life is REALLY like for today’s youth? A panel of experts will share what really goes on in the community each and every day in teen relationships, discuss the dynamics of sexual and gender-based violence, and provide tips to start discussions about difficult topics with the young people in your life.

Learn about the teenage dating climate and gain insights and strategies to begin conversations that will help your loved ones feel listened to, cared for, and safe as they navigate the messy process of growing up.

Risky Business: Why Adolescents Love Risk-Taking and How We Can Help Manage It 03/28/2018

Recent research on the adolescent brain clearly demonstrates that adolescents perceive and process risk assessment in ways that are remarkably unlike adults. Changes in receptor site numbers and sensitivity, neurotransmitter action, and social-emotional responses all combine to influence how teens evaluate risk.

During this presentation, Michael Nerney offers ways to think about and talk about adolescent risk reduction, including access to structured risk taking, and the use of “gist” language. These concepts can be applied across the spectrum of adolescent risky behaviors, including drug and alcohol use, sexual activity, and others.
