From the City of Burlington:
PlanBTV: 2050 is a collaborative, citywide effort to shape Burlington’s future. For the first time, four major City departments are coming together with to create one comprehensive vision for the City of Burlington:
- Office of City Planning: Updating Burlington’s 2019 Comprehensive Plan
- Department of Public Works: Updating and expanding the 2011 Transportation Plan
- Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront: Updating the 2015 Parks Comprehensive Plan
- Community and Economic Development Office : Developing a new comprehensive, citywide economic development plan
By combining these efforts, PlanBTV 2050 will move beyond department boundaries to craft a holistic, long-term vision that reflects how Burlingtonians actually live, work, and move through the city.
Why Plan?
Burlington is a city of just under 45,000 residents who are proud to call the city their home. It is often defined by its:
- Strong connection to Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains
- Dynamic arts, culture, and food scenes
- Mix of long-time Vermonters, domestic migrants, and New Americans
- Anchoring institutions like the University of Vermont, Champlain College, and UVM Medical Center
But Burlington also faces serious challenges:
- A chronic housing shortage impacting citywide affordability
- An ongoing climate emergency with unmet sustainability goals
- A need for a more equitable, resilient economy
- National and local social and political shifts that must focus on equity and inclusion
planBTV 2050 will establish a vision for highly connected communities where proximity to all that makes life great is never farther than a short walk, roll, ride or bus ride away. This planning effort is our chance to build on what makes Burlington great while responding directly to these interconnected challenges.
