The Tour de France of Vermont comes to the streets of downtown Burlington Vermont. When Main Street, College Street, Saint Paul Street and parts of Pine Street are closed down to traffic, crossing guards and pedestrian barriers hold back the cheering spectators as the men's pro racers skillfully careen and agilely maneuver their bikes at breakneck speeds to vie for first place in this prestigious segment of the Green Mountain Stage Race.

When we think of bike racers, we think of the men's pro criterium. If you love to ride your bike on the Burlington bike path, or even long-distance on Vermont's idyllic country roads, you know it is no easy task to make good time. Yet it is one of the greatest and most fun ways to stay in tip-top shape. Now is your rare chance to be up close and personal with the best. Watch and even have a chance to meet dedicated athletes at the very top of their game. You can experience this right in beautiful downtown Burlington, Vermont every Labor Day. Close out summer with this grand event.

When we think of bike racers we think of Ben Wolf, who first won the men's criterium when he was 19. Now at age 26, he has won three Burlington, Vermont bike criteriums and he only comes to Burlington when his busy international racing schedule permits. When Ben Wolf is in the house, you know the ace will be fast and the front runners will undoubtedly leave the pack in a hurry. This was the case in this year's event. Half the riders in the pack were pulled halfway through the race to make room for the front runners. This led to a spectacular finish. Fast and skillfully furious. Please enjoy this grand event in all its glory.

Last week the Governor announced the appointment of the first “Racial Equity Executive Director” in Vermont history. This long awaited appointment is the latest step in the implementation of Act 9 (2018), a bill that created a panel and this Executive Director “to identify and work to eradicate systemic racism within State government.” On a sprint to grow the economy, it has become increasingly clear that if the economy of Vermont is to grow, so too must the racial demographic shift to reflect our nation. But getting black and brown folks to Vermont is only half the issue. How do we create an environment in which they will want to stay?

With a greater Burlington population of nearly half of the state, as goes Burlington, so goes Vermont. What is Burlington doing to accept this challenge? Are similar strategies in play to reflect what is happening at a statewide level? How are the diversity, equity and inclusion strategies in Burlington addressing this challenge? All eyes are on Burlington as the stakes are raised on the future of Vermont.
