Welch to host event on shutdown and the fight to protect Vermonters’ access to health care. Massive spikes in health care premiums coming if Republicans refuse to act. The Senator will be joined by Vermont patients.

Monday, October 6th at 10:30 a.m., U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, hosts a press event with Vermonters who rely on the Affordable Care Act’s premium tax credits to access health coverage. He is joined by Representative Alyssa Black (CHI-24), Alex LeClair (CFO, LeClair Therapy Inc., DBA Essex Physical Therapy & Georgia Physical Therapy), and Lisa Mason (Owner and Chef, Fiddlehead Cuisine).

Government funding lapsed on Tuesday and Senate Republicans have, so far, refused to work with Democrats to protect health care and re-open the government. Immediately after the press event, Senator Welch will return to Washington.

Premium tax credits will expire at the end of the year and millions of Americans could see their premiums more than double in 2026. Nearly 27,000 Vermonters access health coverage through the ACA marketplace and the enhanced premium tax credits. Nationally, more than 24 million Americans will see significantly higher premiums or lose coverage, including 1 in 4 people with chronic conditions, 3.3 million small businesses, and 1.6 million children. An estimated 5 million will lose their health coverage.

Bernie Sanders meet with key abortion rights partners in light of the recent Supreme Court decision to allow the nation’s most restrictive abortion law in Texas to take effect. Rep. Welch discusses the House’s expected passage of H.R. 3755 (the Women’s Health Protection Act), of which Rep. Welch is a cosponsor, to enshrine access to reproductive health care into law for all women across America. The participants also discuss the status of Vermont’s Reproductive Liberty Amendment to protect access to safe and legal abortion in Vermont.
