"Refugees have been arriving in Vermont for over forty years. They have helped to transform towns like Burlington and Winooski in multiple ways. But the program has been undergoing profound changes over the past five years – first the deep cuts of the Trump years meant that far fewer people have been arriving, and more recently the program has expanded to new locations (like Brattleboro and Rutland) and to include newer populations (including many Afghans who have arrived this year). Pablo Bose, UVM"s Migration and Urban Studies scholar, speaks to some of the opportunities and challenges as we work to rebuild the refugee program in the US and in Vermont."

Refugee Resettlement Town Hall with Kesha Ram and Marybeth Redmond 10/19/2021

With a complete disregard for human rights, the Biden administration has embarked on a cruel campaign to deport or detain thousands of Haitian refugees seeking asylum in the United States. The actions of the Biden administration are especially deplorable as the Haitian refugee crisis is the direct result of a long history of U.S. colonialism and racist foreign policy that has caused political and economic turmoil in Haiti. Haitian refugees are being chased on horseback, treated like animals, and detained under inhumane conditions simply for exercising their right to seek asylum. We must act now to stop these atrocities! Join us as we stand up and demand that the Biden administration: Free Them All! Let In All Asylum Seekers! End the Militarization of the Border and Border Communities!

Daniel Bernard Roumain Finishes a 24-Hour Protest Performance 10/24/2019

Daniel Bernard Roumain, known as DBR, is an extraordinary violinist from Haiti. He staged a 24-hour protest in front of City Hall, Burlington to protest the Trump administration policies on immigration. The artist is in the middle of a residency with the Flynn Center, the Lane Series and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra.

Ali's Corner: Sudan Update 05/20/2019

The Second Sudanese Civil War was a conflict from 1983 to 2005 between the central Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army. It was largely a continuation of the First Sudanese Civil War of 1955 to 1972. Six years after it ended, the war resulted in the independence of South Sudan. Vermont became a resettlement state and since 1981 has welcomed many refugees from Sudan.

Today, I am joined by inspiring leaders from both Sudan and South Sudan to talk about the current situation in Sudan with al-Bashir, who is no longer the President of Sudan. What does it mean for the preservation of peace in both countries? What are the hopes and aspirations of people from the Sudan(s) who are now living in Vermont?
