Common Good Vermont: Real Life Application of the Culture of Accountability 03/21/2013

In 2012, seventeen Vermont nonprofits took up the challenge to strengthen their measurement capacity, better serve their clients and increase their sustainability through a federally funded project called Benchmarks for a Better Vermont. Leaders from the 12 month BBVT Performance Institute discuss what they have gained and learned, along with the challenges of building their internal capacity for performance management using Results Based Accountability (RBA).

Results Based Accountability ™ provides nonprofit organizations with a powerful, practical way to measure impact, manage performance, build partnerships and tell your story in ways that strengthen your organization, increase sustainability and improve community well-being. The workshop features:

Overview of the RBA framework,
Models of the five steps for developing Performance Measures, and,
Examples for “turning the curve” on Program Accountability.

RBA is outlined in “Trying Hard is Not Good Enough” and pioneered by Mark Friedman. RBA was first adopted in Vermont more than a decade ago, under the leadership of Con Hogan and the Vermont Agency of Human Services and by the United Way of Chittenden County–among others. Currently, Benchmarks for a Better Vermont is implementing a federal grant to increase the number of nonprofits using the RBA model and to connect them with policy makers to “turn the curve” on pressing community challenges.

Burlington Ward 5 NPA Meeting 03/21/2013

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to empower citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies facilitate communication between the citizens of Burlington and city government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward.
