Hope for Haiti 08/23/2017

A panel discussion on history, politics, and culture with Moise St. Louis, Zach Niles, and Robin Lloyd with Doreen Kraft as moderator.

We are holding this event at a time when many Haitians in the U.S. are considering relocating to Canada out of fear that Trump will not renew their special visas granted after the hurricane. We hope our discussion will provide insights into the unique history and lively culture of the Haitian people.

Moise St. Louis is the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Multicultural Student Services at St Micheal's College and a member of the Haitian community of Vermont. Zach Niles is the American producer of the Haitian band Lakou Mizik, formed after the earthquake of 2010 in an effort to bring healing and hope to the ravaged community. He has also been influential in the formation of an Artists Institute and School in Jacmel, Haiti. Robin and Doreen worked on the animated film "Black Dawn" in Haiti in the ‘70s, and Robin returned to produce several documentaries on Haitian culture and economy.

Bios of the artists below.

Diana Al-Hadid (b. 1981, Aleppo, Syria) is an American artist currently residing in Brooklyn, NY. She received a BA in Art History and BFA in sculpture from Kent University in 2003, and an MFA in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2005. In 2007, Al-Hadid attended the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Al-Hadid’s work has been exhibited at institutions such as the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, MA; the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; The Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and NYU Abu Dhabi, UAE. Residencies and awards include the Siena Art Institute in Italy (2014), the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant (2011), and the Nucci Award from the USF Graphicstudio in Florida (2010). Diana Al-Hadid is represented by Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York City and Aspen, where she has an upcoming solo exhibition at Marianne Boesky Gallery, NY scheduled for September 2017.

Dave Kennedy (b. 1966) is an American artist currently residing in Tacoma, WA. He received his MFA from the University of Washington for Interdisciplinary Arts and an undergraduate degree in Visual Communication from Western Washington University. Kennedy’s works have been exhibited both locally and internationally at such venues as the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art, Photo Center Northwest, Zhou B Art Center, Chicago Industrial Arts & Design Center, Escuela de Belle Arte in Spain, Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society Museum, and the Seattle Art Museum's Gallery. His works have been published globally in such magazines as Art21 and Numéro Cinq. Dave Kennedy has worked as Co-Director and Visiting Lecturer for the University of Washington’s Art in Spain program. Kennedy is a recipient of the 4Culture Individual Project Award; Artist Trust's Grants for Artists Projects; the Joanne Bailey Wilson Endowed Scholarship; and the Vermont Studio Center Fellowship. Kennedy has served on Seattle Art Museum's Blueprint Roundtable panel and has participated as a guest lecturer at the Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington as part of their "Out [O] Fashion" Show. Dave Kennedy is an active member of Photo Center Northwest and represented by Bridge Productions in Seattle, WA.

Lake Champlain-Richelieu River Study Board Public Meeting 07/11/2017

The International Lake Champlain-Richelieu River Study Board hosts a public meeting to receive public comment on its Draft Work Plan.

The Study Board appointed by the International Joint Commission undertakes the work outlined in the 2013 Plan of Study Option B, to more fully explore the causes, impacts, risks, and solutions to mitigate flooding in the Lake Champlain-Richelieu River basin.

The study’s main objectives are to:

Develop and recommend the implementation of a bi-national, real-time flood forecasting and flood inundation mapping system to prepare for and mitigate the impacts of floods.

Recommend measures - structural and non-structural - to mitigate flooding and the impact of flooding throughout the basin.

Determine public, community and stakeholder desirability of the proposed measures to mitigate flooding and the impact of flooding throughout the basin.

The public comment period begins Tuesday, June 27, 2017 and continues until Friday, July 28, 2017. Members of the public are encouraged to submit comments on the Work Plan, either online at www.participateijc.org/champlain-richelieu or by email at ChamplainRichelieu@ottawa.ijc.org. Additionally, members of the public are encouraged to attend the public meetings and chat with Study Board members.

The International Joint Commission is committed to engaging the public in the Lake Champlain-Richelieu River study on an ongoing basis through the Study Board’s Public Advisory Group (PAG). The PAG will be binational and members will represent various areas of interest and regions across the Lake Champlain-Richelieu River basin.
