Institute For Civic Engagement: Sal Landau - Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up 10/23/2012

Part of Burlington College's Institute for Civic Engagement speaker series. Saul Landau is journalist, filmmaker, and Professor Emeritus at California State University, Pomona. Author of 14 books and director of over 50 films, Landau is a senior Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies and a senior fellow and former director of the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam. Landau co-authored A Bush and Botox World with Gore Vidal. He received an Emmy and the George F. Polk Award for investigative journalism for his film produced with filmmaker Haskell Wexler, Paul Jacobs and the Nuclear Gang; the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Assassination on Embassy Row (with John Dinges) about the murder of Orlando Letelier and their colleague Ronnie Karpen-Moffitt. Recipient of the Letelier-Moffitt Human Rights Award for his life's contribution to human rights, Sal Landau is known for incisive, hard hitting documentaries which challenge dominant narratives and history book history. His latest film Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up, "chronicles half a century of hostile US-Cuba relations" by highlighting "decades of assassinations and sabotage at first backed then ignored by the very government that launched a war against terrorism."

Columbian indigenous leader Ligna Pulido is welcomed by members of the Abenaki and women's communities, followed by a discussion.

Ms. Pulido is a member of the Nasa tribe and works with the Cauca Regional Indigenous Council of southwest Colombia and the University of Valle Center for Gender Studies. She has had direct personal experience of the impact of militarization on women in her community. The event is sponsored by Witness for Peace New England, the Winter Center for Indigenous Traditions, and the Burlington branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).

Institute For Civic Engagement: John Collins - Global Palestine 10/11/2012

Part of Burlington College's Institute for Civic Engagement speaker series. As an author and professor John Collins' work focuses on themes of globalization, nationalism, colonialism, violence, memory, political activism, and media criticism. John Collins is professor and chair of global studies at St. Lawrence University in New York. He is the author of Occupied By Memory: The Intifada Generation and The Palestinian State of Emergency and is co-editor, with Ross Glover, of Collateral Language: A User's Guide to America's New War. His articles and reviews have appeared in the Journal of Palestine Studies, Social Text, Globalization, and Middle East Report, among other publications. He holds a Ph.D. in comparative studies in discourse and society from the University of Minnesota, where he was a MacArthur Scholar.
