Media Maven: 7th Annual Media Maven Luncheon: A Picture is Worth 1000 Words: Data Visualization for Nonprofits 09/21/2012

At the 7th Annual NPO Luncheon, CCTV and Common Good Vermont presented a lively panel to outline what it takes for your organization to become a data driven culture and use data visualization (Maps and Infographics) to tell your organization's story. Panelists include: Lauren-Glenn Davitian (on the data driven nonprofit), cartographer Bill Morris (on Burlington Neighborhoods Mapping Project), Leslie Pelch (Vermont Center for Geographic Information) and Peter Kriff (of SILK on Best Practices in Infographics). Andrea Learned, co-author of Don’t Think Pink: What Really Makes Women Buy – and How to Increase Your Share of This Crucial Market (AMACOM, 2004), will give some marketing tips. Andrea is an internationally respected gender marketing expert, speaker and writer. While she focuses on women as the leading indicators of consumer behavior, she also emphasizes that 21st Century men are starting to travel similar buying paths. Andrea believes that storytelling and cause marketing are key ways to present a brand’s facts and attributes to today’s consumer – no gender about it. Andrea contributes to a wide range of publications/blogs, including HuffingtonPost.com, MPDailyfix.com, TomPeters.com, Women-omics.com, and LearnedOnWomen.com - where she presents her most current analysis of consumer/cultural shifts and marketing best practices. She presents regularly to global business audiences, and her opinions have been cited in publications from Adweek to the Christian Science Monitor and The New York Times. Vermont is My Home: Paul Connor, Bridport 08/28/2012

Funded by a grant from the Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council, the ambitious goal of the Vermont is my Home production is to increase the general public’s understanding of people with developmental disabilities as members of our communities.

Paul Connor is a well-liked and accepted fixture in his community. He plays in a Hockey league, shoots pool at a local pub and attends community dinners. In addition, he enjoys racquetball, ice fishing and working on his family farm. The oldest of seven children, Paul is known to a large network of neighbors and friends in his hometown. He has tremendous support for his independent functioning from his family.

Vermont is My Home: Nicole LeBlanc, Burlington 08/28/2012

Funded by a grant from the Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council, the ambitious goal of the Vermont is my Home production is to increase the general public’s understanding of people with developmental disabilities as members of our communities.

After high school, Nicole LeBlanc remained in her rural town and was isolated due to the lack of public transportation, work and educational opportunities. Nicole is a now a student in the SUCCEED program, a collaboration between the Howard Center and the University of Vermont. She has moved into her own apartment and travels frequently as a regional and national advocate for people with autism.

Vermont is My Home: Kyle Moriarty, Montpelier 08/28/2012

Funded by a grant from the Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council, the ambitious goal of the Vermont is my Home production is to increase the general public’s understanding of people with developmental disabilities as members of our communities.

Kyle Moriarity was unable to communicate with his parents, or anyone else, until 6th grade when he was introduced to facilitated communication. A recent graduate of Montpelier High School, Kyle is in a Transition to Work program. He works at Green Mountain Self Advocates, an advocacy organization for people with disabilities. His goal is to advocate for access to assistive technology for youth with disabilities.

Cultural Diversity Series: Exploring Successes and Challenges of the Bosnian and Congolese Communities 05/23/2012

A presentation and discussion exploring the successes and challenges of the Bosnian and Congolese Communities. Burlington High School students Esmir Hadzic, Medina Korajkic and Darijo Piplica share insights into the Bosnian Community.  Cleophace Mukeba speaks to the challenges and successes of the Congolese community and his efforts to improve opportunites and conditions in the Congo through the Vermont Ibutwa Initiative.  Presented as part of the Cultural Diversity Series of the Diversity and Equity Office of the Burlington School District.

Anthony J. Marro, Stephen C. Terry - 'Phil Hoff: How Red Turned Blue in the Green Mountain State' 05/06/2012

The Chitttenden County Historical Society and the Winooski Historical Society co-sponsor authors, Anthony J. Marro and Stephen C. Terry, (Samuel B. Hand was unavailable)  speaking about their recent book 'Philip Hoff: How Red Turned Blue in the Green Mountain State'. The former Governor offers reflections as well. Anthony and Stephen were both Rutland Herald reporters covering Montpelier during the Hoff Administration. Anthony later went on to become editor of Newsday, and retired in 2003. Stephen went on to work for Senator Aiken in D.C., and then was with Green Mountain Power.

 Chittenden County Historical Society. The Society was founded in 1965 by area residents who shared a deep interest in the history of Chittenden County and the Champlain Valley Region. CCHS is a non-profit membership organization. The Society's mission is to encourage discovery and publication of historical material, to promote original research about the area, to highlight specific topics in our history through informative presentations, and to recognize efforts to preserve our past by making annual awards. Chittenden County includes the Vermont towns and cities of: Bolton, Buel's Gore, Burlington, Colchester, Charlotte, Essex, Essex Junction, Hinesburg, Huntington, Jericho, Milton, Richmond, Shelburne, South Burlington, St. George, Underhill, Westford, Williston and Winooski.

CCTV Receives NEH Grant to Support Community Archives

CCTV Center for Media & Democracy is pleased to announce receipt of a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Humanities Collections and Reference Resources grant alongside 32 peer archival institutions across the country. This $49,927 grant award will support efforts to preserve and expand access to audio/visual community history materials in the CCTV Archives. Read more about this opportunity here!
