From the City of South Burlington Library:
Scams are on the rise, and Vermonters continue to feel the impact — with over $10.6 million lost to scams in 2024 alone, part of a steady year-over-year increase in reported fraud.
Join federal and state fraud prevention experts for a free community event focused on helping you, your family, and your neighbors avoid scams and protect your hard-earned money.
As trusted community spaces, libraries are key to spreading awareness and connecting people with resources. This session will cover:
- Current Scam Trends in Vermont
- How to Spot Common Scams
- Practical Prevention Strategies
- What to Do If You or Someone You Know Is Targeted
- Open Q&A
Presenters include:
- Crystal Baldwin, M.Ed., is a nationally awarded consumer protection expert with over 20 years in public service. As Program Manager for the Vermont Attorney General’s Consumer Assistance Program and UVM adjunct faculty, she is a skilled educator, who applies a cross-disciplinary approach to developing action-oriented strategic education and outreach programs.
- Sheri Rockcastle is the Consumer Service & Outreach Administrator for the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation's Banking Division, where, in part, she provides community education on banking and scam prevention. With nearly two decades in state service and a background in business leadership, she works to help Vermonters stay informed and prepared.
- A representative from the FBI Albany Field Office, providing insight on regional scam activity and prevention.
- A representative from the Vermont Office of the United States Security Service, offering decades of experience in financial crimes investigations, as well as specialized training in cyber-related fraud that impacts Vermonters daily.
Together, we can stop scams before they start. We hope to see you there!
