The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and the Role of the United States - Jeremy Ben-Ami 06/13/2012

Emotions run high when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the role of the United States in helping to resolve it. Jeremy Ben-Ami, J Street's founder and a former policy advisory to President Clinton, makes a compelling argument for why, particularly in this election year, there needs to be an alternative Jewish voice in Washington that can positively impact American Middle East policy and bring about a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine stalemate. Ben-Ami outlines how our current policies towards Israel are largely based on a handful of assumptions that do not hold up against current realities, and explains the urgent need for a pro-Israel agenda that includes compromise and engagement with the opposition. Ben-Ami’s prescriptive direction for both American policy and conversation within the American Jewish community was described recently by the New York Times’ Nicholas Kristof as, “a clarion call for American reasonableness in the Middle East.”

Jeremy Ben-Ami founded J Street after a 25-year career in government, politics and communications, in the United States and in Israel. Jeremy has served in a number of senior government positions including as President Bill Clinton's Deputy Domestic Policy Adviser and Policy Director on Howard Dean's Presidential Campaign. Jeremy was most recently Senior Vice President at Fenton Communications. He also has served as the Communications Director for the New Israel Fund and started the Israeli firm Ben-Or Communications while living in Israel in the late 1990s. Jeremy's father was born in Tel Aviv, and much of his family lives in Israel.
